Who represents Iowa?

Iowa sends six members to the United States Congress: two senators, who represent the state as a whole, and four representatives, one for each of Iowa's four congressional districts. The sections below provide background on each member of the delegation, along with a separate, regularly updated section covering their current committee assignments and recent legislative activity.

Joni Ernst — Senator

Joni Ernst was born in Red Oak, Iowa, and grew up on a farm. She earned a degree from Iowa State University and a master's degree from Columbus College, then served in the Iowa Army National Guard for over two decades, including a deployment to Kuwait during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Ernst served in the Iowa State Senate before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2014, becoming the first female combat veteran elected to the Senate and the first woman elected to federal office from Iowa.

Ernst serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee, where she is a senior member. She has been a prominent advocate for military families, veterans' health care, and government spending reduction. Ernst chairs the Senate Republican Policy Committee and has focused on cutting wasteful federal programs, strengthening the military, and supporting agriculture and rural communities in Iowa.

Charles Grassley — Senator

Chuck Grassley was born in New Hartford, Iowa, and has spent virtually his entire adult life in public service. He worked as a farmer and factory worker while serving in the Iowa House of Representatives, then served in the U.S. House before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 1980. Now in his eighth Senate term, Grassley is the longest-serving Republican senator in American history and one of the longest-serving senators overall.

Grassley is known as one of the Senate's foremost champions of government transparency and whistleblower protection, authoring landmark legislation to strengthen federal whistleblower statutes and the False Claims Act. He has chaired both the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate Finance Committee and continues to serve on both panels. Throughout his career he has been a persistent investigator of government waste, fraud, and abuse, and a consistent advocate for Iowa's farming communities.

Mariannette Miller-Meeks — Representative — CD-01

Mariannette Miller-Meeks was born in Ottumwa, Iowa, and served as a physician and ophthalmologist after earning her medical degree from Des Moines University. She also served as a colonel in the United States Army Reserve, completing over two decades of military service. Miller-Meeks served in the Iowa State Senate and ran multiple times for Congress before finally winning Iowa's 1st congressional district in 2020 by just six votes — one of the closest House races in modern history. She has been re-elected to subsequent terms.

Miller-Meeks serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, where her medical background informs her work on health care policy. She has focused on rural health care access, veteran services, and agricultural policy important to eastern Iowa. Miller-Meeks has also been active on oversight matters and has used her medical expertise to engage on public health and pharmaceutical policy debates.

Ashley Hinson — Representative — CD-02

Ashley Hinson was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and grew up in the Cedar Rapids, Iowa area. She attended the University of Iowa and began her career as a television journalist and news anchor at KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids. Hinson served in the Iowa House of Representatives before being elected to the U.S. House in 2020, defeating incumbent Democrat Abby Finkenauer to win Iowa's 2nd congressional district.

Hinson serves on the House Appropriations Committee, a coveted assignment that allows her to advocate directly for federal funding for Iowa communities. She has focused on agriculture, rural infrastructure, and fiscal conservatism. Hinson has also been active on workforce development and education policy, and has used her communications background to be a prominent media presence for Iowa Republicans.

Zachary (Zach) Nunn — Representative — CD-03

Zachary Nunn was born in Iowa and served as an officer in the United States Air Force, completing a career in military intelligence and national security. After his military service, he worked in the defense and intelligence sectors and served in the Iowa House of Representatives. Nunn was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2022, defeating incumbent Democrat Cindy Axne in Iowa's competitive 3rd congressional district.

Nunn serves on the House Agriculture Committee and the House Homeland Security Committee, drawing on his intelligence and national security background in his committee work. He has focused on border security, agricultural policy, and fiscal responsibility. Nunn has positioned himself as a pragmatic conservative focused on the concerns of suburban and rural Iowans in the Des Moines metropolitan area and surrounding communities.

Randy Feenstra — Representative — CD-04

Randy Feenstra was born in Hull, Iowa, and built a career in government finance, serving as Sioux County Treasurer before moving to the Iowa State Senate, where he chaired the Ways and Means Committee. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2020, defeating ten-term incumbent Steve King in the Republican primary and going on to win the general election for Iowa's 4th congressional district.

Feenstra serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, where his background in government finance and tax policy is directly applicable. He has been a consistent advocate for Iowa's agricultural sector, supporting farm programs, crop insurance, and trade agreements that benefit commodity producers. Feenstra has also focused on tax policy, rural broadband infrastructure, and reducing regulatory burdens on Iowa businesses and farms.
