Who represents Idaho?

Idaho sends four members to the United States Congress: two senators, who represent the state as a whole, and two representatives, one for each of Idaho's two congressional districts. The sections below provide background on each member of the delegation, along with a separate, regularly updated section covering their current committee assignments and recent legislative activity.

James Risch — Senator

Jim Risch is the junior United States Senator from Idaho, having served in the Senate since 2009. A member of the Republican Party, he was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1943 and moved to Idaho as a young man. He earned his law degree from the University of Idaho College of Law and worked as a prosecuting attorney before entering politics. He had one of the most extensive careers in Idaho government of any current senator, serving as Ada County Prosecuting Attorney, in the Idaho State Senate (including as Senate President Pro Tempore), as Lieutenant Governor, and briefly as Governor of Idaho in 2006 following the resignation of Dirk Kempthorne.

In the Senate, Risch serves as a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, where he has previously served as ranking member and has been a prominent voice on U.S. policy toward China, Russia, and the Middle East. He also sits on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. He has focused on national security, natural resource policy, and deregulation throughout his Senate career, and his intelligence committee work has given him a deep background in foreign threats and covert operations oversight.

Michael Crapo — Senator

Mike Crapo is the senior United States Senator from Idaho, having served in the Senate since 1999. A member of the Republican Party, he was born in Idaho Falls, Idaho, in 1951 and earned his law degree from Harvard Law School. He worked as an attorney in Idaho Falls before entering politics and served in the Idaho State Senate and the Idaho House of Representatives before his election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1990. He was elected to the Senate in 1998 and has been re-elected multiple times, making him one of Idaho's longest-serving senators.

Crapo serves as a senior member of the Senate Finance Committee, which has jurisdiction over tax policy, trade, and Social Security, and has previously served as its ranking member. He also sits on the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee. He has focused on fiscal conservatism, agricultural policy, natural resource management, and water rights—issues of fundamental importance to Idaho's economy. His long tenure and committee positions have made him one of the most influential voices in the Senate on tax legislation and financial regulation.

Russ Fulcher — Representative — CD-01

Russ Fulcher is the United States Representative for Idaho's 1st Congressional District, which covers the northern and western portions of the state including Coeur d'Alene, Lewiston, and portions of Boise. A member of the Republican Party, he has served in the House since 2019. Fulcher was born in Boise, Idaho, in 1962 and earned his degree from Boise State University and his master's degree from the University of Idaho. He worked in the technology sector, including at Micron Technology, before entering politics. He served in the Idaho State Senate for more than a decade before his election to Congress.

In Congress, Fulcher has focused on natural resource policy, water rights, federal land management, and fiscal conservatism. He sits on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the House Natural Resources Committee, where he has been an advocate for expanded timber harvesting, irrigation water access, and state control over federally managed lands. He is a member of the House Freedom Caucus and has been one of the more consistently conservative members of the Idaho delegation.

Michael Simpson — Representative — CD-02

Mike Simpson is the United States Representative for Idaho's 2nd Congressional District, which covers the eastern and southern portions of the state including Idaho Falls, Twin Falls, and Pocatello. A member of the Republican Party, he has served in the House since 1999, making him one of Idaho's most senior elected officials. Simpson was born in Burley, Idaho, in 1950 and earned his dental degree from Washington University in St. Louis School of Dental Medicine. He practiced dentistry in Blackfoot, Idaho, for many years and served in the Idaho House of Representatives, including as Speaker, before his election to Congress.

Simpson is a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, one of the most powerful positions in Congress, and has used his seniority to secure federal funding for Idaho's water infrastructure, agricultural programs, and national laboratories, including the Idaho National Laboratory, which is one of the nation's premier nuclear energy research centers. He has at times taken more pragmatic positions than some of his Idaho colleagues, working across party lines on water policy and occasionally breaking with his party on appropriations matters. His long tenure has made him a particularly consequential figure for federal investment in Idaho.
